Resource Type: Research report

This report outlines the results of a study to assess two interventions. The randomised controlled trial took place in a community-based gambling treatment service in New Zealand over a 12-month period. The first intervention was a face-to-face 10-session combined cognitive and cue exposure therapy. The second intervention was a Motivational Interviewing intervention that included one face-to-face session, a self-help workbook, and five 'booster' telephone sessions. Findings from the study include:

  • Both interventions were effective in reducing gambling behaviour
  • Both interventions had comparable health care and social costs
  • More personalized interventions had greater outcomes

The report concludes that there may be longer term differences between the two interventions
