This survey was administered by the Northern Ireland Statistic and Research Agency (NISRA) at the request of the Department for Social Development (DSD). The intent of the survey was to measure the prevalence rates of participation, problem gambling and gambling attitudes in Northern Ireland. It was expected that the results would provide evidence to inform gambling-related policies and establish a baseline for further evaluation.
The survey focuses on four themes related to gambling:
- Gambling participation (overall rates, past year gambling, location, expenditure);
- Gambler profiles (demographic characteristics);
- Problem gambling (Problem Gambling Severity Index) and;
- Attitudes towards gambling
The survey was modelled to resemble and be compared to the British Gambling Prevalence Survey 2010. The total sample size was n= 1,032 individuals aged 16 and older living in Northern Ireland.
