In this review, the researchers looked at findings from 66 studies that included data on dropout during psychological treatment for gambling. Dropout was defined in different ways across studies. Dropout rates ranged from 0% to 92%, with the rates in most studies falling between 19.5% and 52.9%. The most common reasons for dropout were practical issues, with fewer clients reporting reasons related to the therapy they received. Predictors of dropout generally showed inconsistent results. Consequences of dropout included more severe gambling symptoms and greater gambling urges, among others. Only two studies attempted to find a solution to dropout by adding a motivation component to the therapy to improve compliance. The findings provide insight into dropout during gambling treatment.
