Journal: International Gambling Studies

Year Published: 2022

Date Added: January 12, 2023

This article summarized 37 studies that applied data science techniques to the area of responsible gambling. This article represents the first attempt to summarize this growing area of research in a systematic way. The authors described the studies according to the main data science technique used: 1) cluster analysis; 2) supervised machine learning; and 3) other techniques. The first two categories of studies mainly relied on online behavioural tracking data. The last used a variety of data sources (e.g., self-report questionnaires). The authors noted some limitations of the studies, including lack of generalizability and difficulty in reproducibility. Several suggestions for future research in this area are offered.
