Journal: Addiction Research & Theory

Year Published: 2024

Date Added: August 03, 2024

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which gambling losses are concentrated in Norway, and how this concentration varies across gambling activities. This study used data provided by Norsk Tipping (NT) on 39,995 customers who were at least 18 years old and gambled at least once on an NT product in 2019.

The researchers found that gambling losses were concentrated among a small group of people. Additionally, this concentration of losses varied by product type. Across all products, the upper 10% of customers who lost the most accounted for about half of the total losses on gambling (52%). For several products, more than half of total gambling losses came from the top 5% of customers who lost the most. High concentration of losses was especially evident for online casino games, sports betting games, and Keno (a type of lottery with daily draw).
