Problem gambling poses a significant public health challenge in the UK. However, many people who gamble and experience gambling problems never seek treatment. Instead, many people look for self-directed ways to reduce their gambling harms. The Canadian Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines (LRGGs) were developed to serve this need. The LRGGs, however, were developed without the use of data from the UK. In this study, the authors analyzed a large set of data from England to examine whether the Canadian LRGGs could be applicable in the UK. The researchers found that increased frequency of gambling and higher number of gambling games engaged in were related to increased gambling harms. Based on their findings, the researchers concluded that the Canadian LRGGs may be applicable to the UK population. More research on the applicability of these guidelines, however, needs to be conducted.
