This report outlines a study on safer gambling messaging. The study examines the effectiveness of different types of messages. The study included a literature review, a focus group, and a randomized control trial. The literature review focused on messages in gambling and other public health areas. The review found that messages were generic and did not present meaningful information. The aims of the focus group were to:
- Identify categories of messages
- Understand concerns around safer gambling messages
Focus group participants preferred norm-based and positive-emotional messages. The randomized control study focused on assessing changes in behaviour from safer gambling messages. The study did not find a significant impact on amounts wagered and time spent gambling. The study found no differences in effectiveness of messages in promoting safer gambling. Recommendations from the study include:
- Messages should focus on positive messaging
- Messages should encourage gamblers to think about the amount spent on gambling
- Messages should encourage self-reflection on gambling behaviours and money spent
