Gambling disorder shares many similarities, such as genetic and cognitive factors, with substance use disorders. Because of these similarities, effective treatment for substance use disorders might be effective in the treatment of gambling disorders. Brief intervention (BI) for at-risk drinking is usually delivered in three steps: (1) screening for the problem behaviour; (2) providing feedback on results; and (3) providing information about possible consequences and advice on how to change drinking habits. The present study is the first step in a larger project that aims to develop methods to prevent at-risk gamblers from developing more serious gambling problems (disordered gambling). The present study developed and tested whether BI for at-risk gambling could be delivered in the primary health care setting.
