Resource Type: Rapid evidence review

This report reviews the effectiveness of interventions to reduce gambling-related harms. Based on studies published between 2020 and 2024, it examines the effectiveness of treatments, barriers and enablers of effectiveness, and gaps in the research. The review also highlights the need to address broader social and health factors that contribute to gambling harm.

Findings include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy had the most robust evidence regarding its effectiveness in the short term.
  • Some other approaches, such as motivational interviewing and feedback interventions, were effective, but the evidence was lacking in quantitative methodologies.
  • Combining interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy and motivational interventions may improve their effectiveness.
  • Individual needs and preferences should determine the type of intervention implemented.
  • Co-occurring issues are common and requires support and aftercare from of a variety of mental health services.
