The way that alcohol affects how people who gamble is not well understood. The researchers examined whether the effect of alcohol on gambling depended on sex, problem gambling severity, and alcohol problems. Survey responses from 1557 Australian adults who regularly gambled on electronic gaming machines were analysed. The researchers found some differences based on sex, problem gambling, and alcohol problems. People who drank when they gambled tended to prefer higher denomination machines compared to people who did not drink when they gambled. People without alcohol problems who drank when they gambled bet on more lines than those who did not drink when they gambled. There were also differences in the way that men and women gambled, depending on whether they drank alcohol while gambling and whether they had gambling problems.
