This study examined the gambling behaviours of patients with epilepsy and clinical factors that might be associated with problem gambling. The researchers reviewed the clinical records of 239 patients who were seen at a clinic in the UK. There were 174 patients with epilepsy and 65 patients with other brain disorders. Rates of gambling participation were lower in both groups of patients than the general population. However, 50% of patients with frontal lobe epilepsy reported gambling. Among the 12 patients who responded positively to the Lie/Bet questionnaire, all were diagnosed with epilepsy. Nine of these patients were taking the anti-seizure medication Levetiracetam (LEV) or Brivaracetam (BRIV). These results suggest that patients with frontal lobe epilepsy may be at higher risk of problem gambling, especially if they are taking LEV or BRIV.
