This report outlines a study on the impacts of COVID-19 on gambling. It focused on Ontarian gamblers. It examined gambling behaviours, financial stability, and mental health and wellbeing. Three surveys were conducted in 2020. Respondents were adults living in Ontario. A total of 608 gamblers completed all three surveys. This report presents the results of the survey and the impacts of COVID-19 on players, families, and communities. Key findings include:
- More Ontarians moved to online gambling, including those who mostly gambling in-person before the pandemic
- The majority of Ontarian gamblers reported experiencing no problem gambling
- The majority of Ontarian gamblers reported using responsible gambling strategies
Conclusions and recommendations include:
- Key priority populations were found including young adults, men, and specific ethno-cultural groups
- Player supports are needed as Ontario expands online gambling
- Knowledge mobilization and collaboration is needed to track changes in behaviours and risks
This study has also supported the development of prevention programs to reduce gambling harms in Ontario.
