Previous research has found that gambling disorder is linked to difficulties in emotion regulation, as well as blame and shame. This study examined the links between gambling severity, blame, and shame. It also examined how these links might be explained by emotion regulation and gambling motives. A clinical and non-clinical sample of 158 adolescents and young adults completed a survey. Then, the sample was divided into three groups based on gambling severity. The findings show that people with more severe gambling problems expressed greater feelings of blame and shame. The relationship between gambling severity and shame was partly explained by the emotion regulation strategy of self-blame. Gambling severity, blame, and shame were also linked to different gambling motives and emotion regulation strategies.
