Loot boxes are a common feature in video games and are prevalent in many high-grossing mobile games. One self-regulation measure that has been adopted is to require gaming companies to disclose the probabilities of obtaining rewards from loot boxes within their games. In this study, the researchers examined compliance with this self-regulation among the 100 highest-grossing iPhone games in the United Kingdom. They found that 77% of the games contained loot boxes. However, only 64% of the games with loot boxes disclosed their probabilities. 64% of the games provided in-game disclosures. Only 21.3% of the games provided website disclosures. Many games’ disclosures were not made available in a prominent way and could be difficult to access.
