Resource Type: Research report

This slide deck presents findings from a research experiment on the effect of gambling activity statements on gambling behaviour. Activity statements summarize a peron's key gambling consumption statistics over a period of time (e.g., amount spent, won, or lost). The Behavioural Insights Team in the United Kingdom conducted the experiment with 5,463 adults who gamble. Four different versions of activity statements were tested for their impact on online gambling behaviour. The study concluded that activity statements help people to learn more about their gambling behaviour and make more informed decisions.

Findings include:

  • Seeing any of the activity statements resulted in lower amounts bet, lower average stakes, and improved recall of the amount bet.
  • The 'baseline' and 'call to action' statements decreased the total amount bet and average stake size the most, compared to receiving no activity statement.
  • Activity statements had no impact on the time spent gambling or the number of spins.
  • 9 in 10 people felt that activity statements should be implemented.
