This report evaluates the TalkBanStop pilot. TalkBanStop is a collaborative campaign. It promotes combining practical tools with support options to help people at risk of gambling harms. It uses a layered, partnered approach to link a national helpline, GamStop, and GamBan. GamCare offers the helpline, GamStop is the national self-exclusion program, and GamBan is gambling software. It is part of the Gambling Commission's National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms. The pilot began in September 2020 and ended after one year. TalkBanStop begins with an individual contacting the National Gambling Helpline. They are then able to access a free GamBan licence and learn about self-exclusion from gambling. The purpose of the evaluation was to:
- Examine the effectiveness of activities supporting the TalkBanStop pilot
- Examine the extent of program outputs and assess effectiveness of the pilot
Evaluators used a mixed methods approach to explore the pilot program. Findings show that partners successfully raised awareness of the program. It has also been effective in reducing online gambling. Recommendations in the report include:
- Input from individuals with lived experience should be included in discussions
- Ongoing engagement with stakeholders could include workshops on how to include TalkBanStop into workplaces
- Review training processes and resources available to call advisors
- Signposting between partner websites can enhance visibility of the TalkBanStop program
