Author(s): Wardle, Heather ; Tipping, Sarah

Publisher: Gambling Commission

Year Published: 2025

Date Added: April 04, 2025

Resource Type: Research report

This short report explores the reasons people give for engaging in gambling and how these reasons are related to different types of gambling. Data were analyzed from the first annual report for the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB), based on data collected in 2023. The Gambling Survey for Great Britain used the Reasons for Gambling Questionnaire (RGQ) to investigate the reasons for people's participation in certain types of gambling. The main reasons people gave for taking part in gambling activities were grouped into themes: monetary, social, enhancement, coping/escapism, and challenge. Online activities tended to be more strongly associated with motives related to coping and escapism. In-person activities tended to be more strongly associated with enhancement and social reasons (with the exception of gambling machines). Monetary reasons were not the main motivation for taking part in most gambling activities.
