This report summarizes the results of a survey of people who bet on sports in Manitoba. The purpose was to generate baseline information to help inform operations, policies, and public education campaigns. The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba contracted Prairie Research Associates to conduct the survey between March and April 2024. Survey respondents were 379 (online panel) and 121 (random-digit dialling) Manitobans who had gambled on sports in the past 12 months. Survey questions included types of bets, frequency of betting, checking odds, largest daily bets, and losses, influence of promotions and use of safer gambling tools.
Key findings:
- 21% of Manitobans have bet on sports in the past 12 months – either through sportsbooks or through bets placed with friends or family.
- 52% of people who bet on sports reported placing online bets in the past year, with about 60% of these people reporting betting at least weekly, including 15% who bet daily.
- 16% of people who bet on sports reported wanting to reduce how much or how often they bet.
- 58% of people who bet on sports agreed there is a need for more campaigns and social responsibility messaging that emphasizes lower-risk behaviours or strategies for betting on sports.
