Resource Type: Research report

This report outlines the gambling peer support groups that are currently available to women in the UK. It explores the strengths and weaknesses of the groups for women who attend them and for the organizations that provide them. The researchers conducted interviews with 11 women and with 10 stakeholders. The stakeholders interviewed were from Betknowmore UK, GamLearn, The Broke Girl Society, Breakeven, GAMILY, GamFam and Gordon Moody. Findings include that peer support groups have many benefits for both the participants and peer support workers. For example, the sharing of lived experience allowed people to feel understood and to form deep connections with others. However, groups were found to need additional support to promote engagement and help to prevent relapse. One of the recommendations is to target peer support groups to specific population groups, especially those who would not usually engage with support services.
