The purpose of this study was to see whether personalized messages could help ‘nudge’ people to withdraw money from their online gambling account. The researchers used a dataset provided by the national Dutch Lottery operator, Nederlandse Loterij. This dataset included information on 4,049 customers. Each customer read at least one personalized message. There were two types of messages used, a ‘winning streak’ message and a ‘withdrawal’ message. The researchers examined the data using a matched-pairs analysis. About 38% of people who read the ‘winning streak’ message withdrew money from their gambling account on the same day. About 18% of people who read the ‘withdrawal’ messages withdrew money from their gambling account on the same day. People who read the personalized messages withdrew more money from their account compared to those who did not read any messages.
