Illegal online gambling sites, also known as offshore gambling sites, operate outside of the U.S. They do not have a valid U.S. license but accept bets from people living in the U.S. Online casino reviews (OCRs) linked with offshore sites are not as likely to present information accurately about the legality of such sites in the U.S. Many people use OCRs to learn more about online gambling and access reviews about the quality of gambling websites. This study examined how OCRs present information about the use of offshore gambling sites in the U.S. It analyzed 102 OCRs that were accessible from Nevada, USA. Many of these OCRs promoted offshore sites. Most OCRs that promoted offshore gambling sites (86%) discussed such sites positively. Some OCRs recommended offshore sites while explaining that online gambling is legal in the U.S. Other OCRs stated that offshore sites are legal in the U.S. Some OCRs stated that offshore gambling is justifiable because no individual in the U.S. has been arrested for online gambling. This study showed different frames and justifications that OCRs use to discuss offshore gambling sites.
