The Quinte longitudinal study (QLS) followed a cohort of 4,121 adults living in the Quinte region in southwestern Ontario, Canada for a period of 5 years (2006 to 2011). More specifically, the cohort consisted of people residing within 70 kilometres of the city of Belleville, Ontario. This particular region was chosen as one of the original purposes of the study was to assess the social and economic impact of a new horse race track with slot machines planned for the Quinte region. However, the planned venue was not built so the study’s exclusive focus became the natural course and etiology of gambling and problem gambling. As part of this investigation, the QLS also investigated the normal patterns of continuity and discontinuity in gambling and problem gambling.

The study consists of 1) a Response data set containing all the main QLS variables collected from participant questionnaires and 2) a Process data set that contains variables relevant to the activities and procedures of the research process which were used to assess participant retention rates (e.g. data related to participant-staff interactions and participant activity throughout the 5-year assessment period). An ID variable common to both the Response and Process data sets allows these files to be linked, if needed.

User manuals and codebooks explaining the data set contents are also provided.

Keywords: gambling attitudes ; gambling behaviours ; problem gambling

Topics: Gambling Cognitions

Conceptual Framework Factors:   Cultural - Socio-cultural Attitudes

Geographic Coverage: Canada ; Canada, Ontario

Study Population: Individuals aged 18 to 90 residing within 70 kilometres of the city of Belleville, Ontario.

Sample Size: N=4,121

Sampling Procedure: The catchment area of the QLS project was a 70-kilometre radius circle around the site of a proposed new racetrack-with-slots in the city of Belleville, Ontario, Canada. Recruitment was conducted via random digit telephone dialling of telephone numbers from a pool of numbers with area codes and prefixes estimated to be within 70 kilometres of the city of Belleville. Two samples were recruited: a General Population and an At Risk sample. Potential participants were asked a series of questions to confirm if they were eligible for the survey as part of either sample group. If the person was deemed eligible they were then asked if they were interested in participating in the QLS. If the person agreed, they were sent an email with a link to the online questionnaire or booked into a time slot at the Belleville office (where they completed the survey online via one of the QLS office computers). Please refer to the QLS Data Set User Manual for additional information on sampling.
