The Taking Part survey is a national survey of cultural and sport participation in England. It was first commissioned in 2005 and runs every year. It is commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The survey collects data from a representative cross-section of adults (16+) and children (5-15). It collects data on demographics and individuals' participation in or attendance at:

  • Sports
  • Arts
  • Heritage sites such as museums, galleries, and archives

It also includes barriers of access. Taking Part 2006-2007, or Year 2, includes interviews with 24,174 adults aged 16 and over, and 2,454 children aged 11-15. Information was gathered from parents or guardians for children aged 4-10. Topics covered by the 2006-2007 survey include:

  • Broadcasting
  • Volunteering
  • Licensing laws

For gambling, the survey asked respondents questions about:

  • Gambling frequency
  • Gambling products used
  • Money spent on gambling

To gain access to the data, you must apply and receive approval from the UK Data Service. No financial costs are required to access these files.
