The Taking Part survey is a national survey of cultural and sport participation in England. It was first commissioned in 2005 and runs every year. It is commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The survey collects data from a representative cross-section of adults (16+) and children (5-15). It collects data on demographics and individuals' participation in or attendance at:
- Sports
- Arts
- Heritage sites, such as museums, galleries, and libraries
It also includes barriers of access. The first three years of the survey included questions about gambling. Questions about gambling were reintroduced in Taking Part, 2019-2020, or, Year 15. For Year 15, 7,502 adults and 620 children aged 11-15 were interviewed. Information was also gathered from parents or guardians of 834 children aged 5-10. Topics covered by the 2019-2020 survey include:
- Digital activities
- Community participation
- Personal well-being
For gambling, the survey asked respondents questions about:
- Participation in a National Lottery
- Participation in society lotteries
- Participation in sports betting
Gambling data is available in Taking Part 2019-20: Questionnaires. To gain access to the data, you must apply and receive approval from the UK Data Service. No financial costs are required to access these files. A Special Licence Access version contains additional geographic variables. This version is available to UK residents only.
