This report is an evaluation of TalkBanStop, a gambling harm support program in the United Kingdom. TalkBanStop is a partnership between three organizations: GamCare (support), GAMSTOP (self-exclusion), and Gamban (blocking software) to reduce gambling-related harm through a layered support model. This creates a combined effect of support, self-exclusion, and blocking, which makes gambling access difficult and supports recovery. The evaluation involved an online survey of 1,263 people, a focus group with 55 people who had engaged with one or more of the program elements, and a review of program monitoring data. Overall, TalkBanStop was found to be of value to people, especially when people engaged with multiple elements of the program. The layered model is effective, however, improvements can be made by increasing understanding of how the program works, reducing friction, and tailoring support for specific audiences.
Findings include:
- 68% of people found it much easier to reduce gambling when using more than one element of TalkBanStop.
- Awareness of TalkBanStop and its components has increased since the pilot. For example, awareness of the National Gambling increased from 48% in December 2020 to 64% in March 2026.
- Paid media campaigns were effective in increasing awareness, with over 76 million impressions delivered in one campaign period.
- The National Gambling Helpline is a key entry point, with a high conversion rate from helpline referrals to Gamban sign-ups (71.38% in 2023–24).
- Users want clearer communication, streamlined onboarding, and proactive follow-up to maintain engagement and address barriers.
