The presentation outlined a recent study on the impacts of COVID-19 on gamblers. The study focused on gamblers in Ontario, Canada. COVID-19 resulted in restrictions to many business. This included land-based gambling venues and in-person responsible gambling programs. The purpose of the study was to improve harm prevention programs and community outreach. It focused on the following:
- How restrictions affected gambling behaviours.
- How individuals were seeking responsible gambling information.
The study surveyed 2,005 adult gamblers living in Ontario to assess the impact of COVID-19. The results showed that previous land-based gamblers were gambling online. Online gamblers were also younger. There was low awareness of responsible gambling resources. However, respondents seekinging help were interested in learning about:
- The odds of winning.
- Strategies for keeping gambling fun.
- Managing time and/or money.
Individuals were more likely to seek responsible gambling information online. Suggestions to improve programs during the COVID-19 restrictions include:
- Introduce new community outreach options highlighting the risks of online play.
- Offer programs directed to younger age groups
- Create online educational resources.
