Journal: Nordic Studies on Alcohol and Drugs

Year Published: 2024

Date Added: August 06, 2024

This study examined how different types of gambling and digital gaming contribute to at-risk gambling and gaming over time. The researchers analyzed data collected over four time points from Finnish adults. They found that various gambling types were linked with both at-risk gambling and gaming. Online casino games presented the highest risk. The prevalence of at-risk gaming was much lower than that of at-risk gambling. Gambling on online casino games and offline slot machines increased at-risk gambling behaviours over time. Monthly microtransactions within digital games increased at-risk gambling and gaming behaviours over time. But the amount of money spent on digital gaming was small compared to gambling.
