Gambling disorder is linked to substance use disorders (SUDs). People who have trouble with emotion regulation are more at risk for psychological disorders, like SUDs. This study examined the links between emotion regulation difficulties and increased gambling and SUD symptoms. A total of 412 adults living in the Republic of Cyprus completed an online survey. All participants gambled regularly. Participants with gambling addiction were at higher risk for SUDs. Alcohol addiction and gambling disorder were linked to difficulties in emotion regulation. But emotion regulation was not linked to nicotine dependence or problematic drug use. Participants with gambling addiction only, or with both gambling and substance use addictions showed less emotional awareness and acceptance.
