The purpose of this study was to better understand how people who gamble perceive and experience consumer protection measures. Three focus group were conducted with 19 adults in Germany who had gambled in the past year. Participants reviewed and provided feedback on consumer protection materials, including a leaflet from Lotto Brandenburg and information on gambling websites. They also made suggestions for improvements. Overall, participants had limited awareness and recall of consumer protection measures. They criticized consumer protection information as being poorly visible, text-heavy, and not credible when created by gambling operators. Participants suggested improving visibility, using concise and encouraging language, adding interactive features, and using new media (e.g., videos, social media). The findings highlight the need to involve people who gamble in the development of consumer protection measures to improve their reach and effectiveness.
