Journal: Journal of Gambling Studies

Year Published: 1999

Date Added: January 28, 2020

This article encourages the adoption of a public health perspective of gambling. The researchers outlined the benefits of adopting a public health perspective of gambling and gambling related harm. The researchers also proposed the use of The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion to guide strategies for action. Specifically, they provided rationales and key actions for five strategies. The first is developing personal skills. The second is strengthening community action. The third strategy is creating supportive environments. Fourth is to build healthy public policy. The fifth strategy is reorienting health services. These strategies are recommended to minimize the negative impact of gambling while appreciating its potential benefits.
