Author(s): Gambling Support BC

Publisher: Independent Gambling Control Office

Year Published: 2026

Date Added: June 22, 2026

Resource Type: Government report

This action plan outlines the British Columbia Independent Gambling Control Office’s actions to address problem gambling risk. The plan is a response to a 2025-2026 study of the prevalence of problem gambling in the Canadian province. The prevalence study found an increase in risk of problem gambling, with 19% of people at moderate or high risk. The actions in the plan are intended to support earlier help-seeking, increase awareness of safer gambling, and improve access to prevention and support services.

The recommended actions involve:

  • Strengthening prevention and awareness, especially in gaming environments, social media, and online betting platforms
  • Improving outreach to higher-risk populations (e.g., young adults, people experiencing financial strain, newcomers, Indigenous and racialized residents, people with disabilities, and people who gamble more online and on illegal sites)
  • Addressing stigma and barriers to seeking support
  • Improving awareness of safer and regulated gambling options
  • Supporting early education and prevention among youth, including the provincial delivery of a youth gambling prevention curriculum
  • Monitor emerging gambling trends through ongoing prevalence studies, targeted research, and enhanced tracking
