Year Published: 2020

Date Added: March 19, 2021

Resource Type: Factsheet

This factsheet provides an overview of the global and national impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the gambling industry. The pandemic led to the closure of in-person gambling activities. This has caused a move to online gambling activities. This migration has helped to increase gambling revenue.

Player's gambling habits have changed due to pandemic shutdowns. There is a greater interest in online gambling. Many have tried one or more online gambling activities. Gamblers who used online gambling before the pandemic used more than one online gambling activity, played longer, and spent more money. Sport betting players turned to esports and simulated matched to place bets.

In response to the pandemic, regulators recommend the gambling industry take extra measures to protect users. Recommendations include:

  • Remind players of responsible gambling habits.
  • Limit advertisements and incentives to attract new players.
  • Increase visibility to safe gambling messages.
