Many governments require land-based gambling venues to train their staff in responsible gambling. In this article, the authors review evidence about how staff training programs in responsible gambling affect both staff and players. The authors searched for research articles using online databases and Google. The review showed that many studies had poor quality of evidence. Staff felt more confident that they could identify players who show signs of problem gambling after their training. However, training programs did not seem to provide staff with the practical skills they need to approach players who need help. The authors provide suggestions for researchers, gambling operators, and policy makers regarding training program content and evaluation.
