This report explores links between gambling and homelessness in older adults. Homelessness is one of the most severe gambling harms. Older adults seem to be more at risk of homelessness from gambling. This study includes a review of existing literature. Results from the review include:
- A large portion of homeless populations do not gamble
- The prevalence of harmful gambling is higher among homeless populations than the general community
- There are gaps in the literature related to homelessness and gambling
The study also examined gambling and homelessness among older adults in Victoria, Australia. The researchers interviewed 48 key informants. Results from the study include:
- Gambling among older adults experiencing homelessness is often hidden
- The link between gambling and homelessness is complex with many factors
- Some responses to gambling and homelessness are effective, but there are gaps in services
The report concludes that there is a need to address gambling and homelessness. Recommendations include:
- Expanding screening for potential problem gambling across homeless populations
- Increase financial counseling services for older adults
- Provide education to service providers so that can identify and respond to gambling issues in homeless populations
