Exclusion programs allow people to ban themselves, or be banned, from gambling venues. However, over 80% of people in exclusion programs continue to gamble. This could be because other mental health problems make it difficult for them to quit. This study measured gambling disorder and other mental health issues in people in casino exclusion programs (i.e. casino excluders). The majority of casino excluders suffered from gambling disorder and other mental health disorders at some point in their life. They generally experienced mental health disorders before their gambling problems started. They also did not seek help or enter an exclusion program until several years had passed since they were first aware of their gambling problems. Therefore, casino staff should be trained to detect gambling disorders and direct individuals towards gambling-support and treatment options.
