This report highlights early signs and shared concerns about gambling-related financial harm from across various sectors. The report draws on publicly available reports and data, as well as a working group of people from finance, healthcare, payments, and research. Insights centre on the need to track early indicators of potential harm, as opposed to only monitoring for disorders or crises to develop.
Findings include:
- Gambling has changed from a distinct, cash-based activity to a normalized digital financial behaviour.
- Digital access and forms of accessing instant funds have changed the way people spend.
- There is a lack of financial literacy about the complexity, speed, and integration of modern financial and gambling-like products.
- Responsibility for the prevention of financial harm is fragmented across sectors.
