This report outlines the experiences and attitudes of children and young people towards gambling. The research focused on members of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) communities. The goal of the report is to improve resources for prevention, education, and treatment to these communities. The report is based on a series of focus groups and interviews that took place in 2018.
Criteria for participants was the following:
- Between the ages of nine and 24.
- Identify as being Black, Asian, or any ethnic minority.
- Live in either England, Wales, or Scotland.
Many participants did not see gambling in a social context as gambling. Participants felt gambling was viewed differently in their culture compared to white British culture. Over half said they had never gambled before. Almost all participants did not know how to access help for gambling-related harm.
Recommendations from the report include:
- Determine how gambling support organizations can work with community leaders to reach at-risk individuals.
- Develop industry-wide campaign to ensure people are aware of signs of problem gambling.
- Further research to better understand how to raise awareness of problem gambling in BAME communities.
