Year Published: 2021

Resource Type: Research report

This report examines gambling in Non-English Speaking Background communities in the Northern Territory, Australia. Communities examined originated from Southern and Eastern Europe, North-East Asia, South-East Asia, and Southern and Central Asia. It explores gambling behaviours and gambling-related problems in these communities. Findings from the study include:

  • The most harmful form of gambling was playing electronic gambling machines
  • Community leaders believed that younger people took part in harmful online gambling
  • People experiencing problem gambling were less involved in their community
  • Shame and social stigma were barriers to help-seeking
  • Cultural views of gambling led to protective factors

The report outlines strategies to prevent harms from gambling. These include:

  • Translate responsible gambling information and information about support services into community languages
  • Develop training workshops for community leaders on available gambling support services
  • Use social media as a tool to promote responsible gambling
  • Translate screening tools to community languages
