This report examines gambling in Non-English Speaking Background communities in the Northern Territory, Australia. Communities examined originated from Southern and Eastern Europe, North-East Asia, South-East Asia, and Southern and Central Asia. It explores gambling behaviours and gambling-related problems in these communities. Findings from the study include:
- The most harmful form of gambling was playing electronic gambling machines
- Community leaders believed that younger people took part in harmful online gambling
- People experiencing problem gambling were less involved in their community
- Shame and social stigma were barriers to help-seeking
- Cultural views of gambling led to protective factors
The report outlines strategies to prevent harms from gambling. These include:
- Translate responsible gambling information and information about support services into community languages
- Develop training workshops for community leaders on available gambling support services
- Use social media as a tool to promote responsible gambling
- Translate screening tools to community languages
