This blog post examines loot boxes in videos and links to gambling-related harms. It provides an explanation of what loot boxes are. It also summarizes issues regulators are struggling with regarding loot boxes. This includes how items from loot boxes can be exchanged for real-word money. The authors outline research linking loot box purchases to problematic gambling. They also explain gambling-related harms that may be linked to loot boxes.

The authors argue that loot boxes are similar to slot machines. Similarities include unknown outcomes and small odds for a favorable outcome. Players who use loot boxes can get in a similar dark flow to slot machine players. Players also seem to use slots or video games as a coping mechanism for negative aspects of their lives. The authors conclude that there is extensive research linking loot boxes to gambling problems. They also note that loot boxes may be problematic for players using gaming to escape.
