Responsible gambling (RG) tools can be used to help lower gambling behaviours and gambling-related problems. One RG tool is self-exclusion. It is not clear how people who play daily fantasy sports (DFS) use self-exclusion. This study examined how people use self-exclusion on a DSF platform. It also examined the different patterns of play that might predict whether someone uses self-exclusion. The researchers used player records from DraftKings, which included information from 36,123 people. The researchers matched cases of people who self-excluded to people did not to better understand differences in playing patterns. The researchers found less than 0.5% of people in the sample self-excluded. Almost one-third of those who self-excluded did so more than once. People who self-excluded entered a greater variety of contests and sports. They also entered contests with higher entry fees than those who did not self-exclude. But people who self-excluded did not enter in riskier contests or experience more losses than those who did not self-exclude.
