Most people gamble recreationally. For some people, gambling can become problematic. Responsible Gambling (RG) strategies have been developed to help reduce potential harms related to gambling. Pop-up messages are an example of an RG strategy. Pop-up messages are informative messages that appear on-screen during a gambling session. This article is the first to review and assess past studies looking at the effectiveness of pop-up messages on gambling-related behaviours and thoughts. The results show that pop-up messages have a substantial effect on reducing problematic gambling behaviours and thoughts. The article suggests that pop-up messages are effective tools to reduce problematic gambling. The article also identifies the need for long-term follow-up studies on the effectiveness of pop-up messages.
