This report examines links between gambling harms and the location of gambling venues. Greater accessibility to gambling venues is linked to higher rates of gambling and problem gambling. In Australia, gambling venues are usually located in lower socioeconomic communities. This is a concern due to unequal consequences on more vulnerable communities. The aims of this study were:
- Examine whether living near a gambling venue influences gambling behaviours and harms
- Identify characteristics of individuals most influenced by closeness to gambling venues
- Provide evidence that can inform policy around accessibility to gambling venues
The study included geographical data of gambling venue locations and individual survey data. The survey data included information on gambling behaviours, health, and finances. Findings from the study include:
- People living further away from gambling venues were less likely to gamble
- People living closer to gambling venues gambled more, which led to harmful outcomes
- Effects of living close to a venue were largest for more vulnerable populations
The report concludes that living near a gambling venue may increase financial hardship and mental health problems. This report is useful for policymaking and approving future gaming licence applications.
