Reports

Author(s): Australian Government

Publisher: Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts

Year Published: 2026

Date Added: April 16, 2026

Resource Type: Government report

This report published by the Australian government considers the potential impact of changes to policy for sports betting advertising in Australia. It acknowledges that gambling harm is increasing and is a signficant public health concern. Sports betting advertising is seen to be contributing to the normalization of gambling among young people. Current regulation around sports betting advertising is not aligned with public views. To address these concerns, three policy options are considered: 1) maintain current regulations, 2) implement a package of restrictions, and 3) introduce a full ban on sports betting advertising. An assessment of the impacts of these options was conducted that took into account government costs, industry costs, consumer costs, and the potential socio-economic benefit. Due to a lack of available evidence and data, a formal cost benefit analysis was not possible. The government also conducted a public consultation. The report concludes by selecting to implement a package of additional restrictions on advertising.
