This report examines gambling and gambling problems in Canada. It focuses on people living in Canada aged 15 or older. It uses data from the 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), Gambling Rapid Response. The Canadian Problem Gambling Index is used to identify people at risk of problem gambling. Findings in the report include:
- People from lower-income households are less likely to gamble than those from higher-income households
- People from lower-income households are more vulnerable to gambling problems
- Men were more likely to report gambling participation than women in all age groups
- Immigrants reported less gambling than non-immigrant participants
The data presented in the report was collected before single-event sports betting was legalized in Canada. The data is a useful baseline to observe changes in gambling behaviours that result from new legislation.
