This report outlines the results of a follow-up study assessing two interventions. This study took place 24 months, or two years, after the initial study. The first intervention was a face-to-face 10-session combined cognitive and cue exposure therapy. The second intervention was a Motivational Interviewing intervention that included one face-to-face session, a self-help workbook, and five 'booster' telephone sessions. Findings from the follow-up study include:
- Both interventions showed long-term positive outcomes with reductions in gambling behaviours and harms
- Both showed long-term positive mental health benefits
- Younger adults had a higher risk of pre-treatment and in-treatment dropout. Māori and people with lower education levels had a higher risk of pre-treatment dropout
The report concludes that both interventions have positive long-term outcomes. However, the report notes that the results may not reflect accurate long-term outcomes due to high dropout rates and a low sample size in the follow-up study. The report recommends research to understand the unique characteristics of people who receive help from the interventions.
