Disseminating Evidence

This page collates all the current or recent research projects commissioned by GambleAware and the Gambling Commission of Great Britain, and knowledge translation and exchange work by GREO to accelerate the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms in Great Britain.

To see the infrastructures, initiatives, and related impacts of our first year working with Strategy stakeholders, including the Gambling Commission, to make better and faster progress to reduce gambling harms, see our new report Accelerating Progress on the National Strategy to Reduce Harms.

GREO prepares full research reviews and evidence briefs in partnership with the Gambling Commission, summarizing the latest research evidence on gambling topics:

  • Rapid Evidence Review: Effective treatment and support for problem gambling (2020)
  • Rapid Evidence Review: The role of credit cards in gambling (2020) (Full Report; Plain Language Summary)
  • Evidence Brief: Systems of funding for gambling research (2020)
  • Evidence Brief: Self-exclusion research highlights (2019)
  • Evidence Brief: Responsible gambling on regulated and unregulated online gambling websites (2019)

GREO also creates plain language summaries of all other research reports commissioned as part of the National Strategy, and publishes a bulletin highlighting other recent research and data on gambling-related harms.

Research Snapshots

GREO translates and disseminates evidence on all of the National Strategy research themes through our Research Snapshot program. Every week, GREO creates five snapshots of new research articles on gambling and related harms. All snapshots are published to GREO's Evidence Centre and can be delivered to your inbox monthly by signing up for Evidence Centre content alerts. We also create a summary of Research Snapshots published each month.

See GREO's full collection of gambling Research Snapshots.

Current Research Projects

Research projects commissioned as part of the National Strategy are listed under the strategy themes below. Britain-based research for the National Strategy is primarily commissioned by GambleAware. To see all research publications commissioned by GambleAware, see GambleAware's Research Publications page.

Defining, Measuring, and Monitoring Gambling Related Harms

To support the National Strategy, GREO is conducting a social network analysis of UK-based gambling researchers to identify experts in different areas of gambling harm. The report for phase 1, was published in December 2020.

The Gambling Commission has also commissioned a study to scope different methodologies for estimating social costs of gambling-related harms, and GambleAware has commissioned a framework for measuring gambling harm among children and young people, and a series of studies on gambling-related suicide. More information about these projects in progress is available on the National Strategy website.

Patterns of Play
To better understand the link between gambling harm and patterns of play, GambleAware has commissioned a study using industry data to understand patterns of play, a scoping study for an independent repository of gambling industry data, and a study analysing bank transactional data. More information about these projects in progress is available on the National Strategy website.
Changes in Gambling Behaviour Over Time
As part of the National Strategy, the Gambling Commission has commissioned a scoping study to determine the most effective methodological approach for a longitudinal gambling study in Great Britain. More information is available on the National Strategy website.
What Works in Industry-Based Harm Minimisation

GREO completed a trial project that scoped and built a repository platform where remote gambling operators could submit information relevant to customer interaction and review materials submitted by others. The final report was published in April 2020, along with an infographic.

To better understand what works in industry-based harm minimisation, GambleAware has commissioned research projects on applying behavioural insights to reduce problem gambling, developing gambling industry best-practice for safer gambling messaging, and an evaluation of the impact of Multi-Operator Self-Exclusion Schemes (MOSES) and awareness and barriers to self-exclusion. More information about these projects is available on the National Strategy website.

Prevention and Education

GREO is conducting a review of the effectiveness of prevention and education measures aimed at different groups. This report will be published in 2020.

GREO has completed a rapid evidence review on the role of credit cards and gambling. The full report and and a plain-language summary have been published on the GREO website.

GambleAware has also commissioned a research project on understanding the impact of advertising on children, young people, and vulnerable people. The final synthesis report (PDF) by Ipsos MORI has been published as well as a plain-language summary of the report by GREO. More information is available on the National Strategy website.

Treatment and Support

GREO conducted a rapid evidence review of the effectiveness of different problem gambling treatments for different groups. The full report, Effective Treatment and Support for Problem Gambling, was published in 2020.

GambleAware has also commissioned a gap analysis of treatment provision in Great Britain, and an evaluation of GambleAware-funded treatment systems. More information is available on the National Strategy website.
