Researchers continue to examine individual-level differences in gamblers in an attempt to identify factors that may differentiate recreational gamblers from problem gamblers. Some of this research focuses on differences present since birth (so called 'nature' based differences), while other research examines differences that develop during the gambling process.
Research suggests important differences in personality, impulsivity, and reward system processing between recreational and problem gamblers. In addition, gambling cogitations may play an important role in the development of gambling problems.
