Research data management encompasses the processes applied throughout the lifecycle of a research project. This includes guiding the collection, documentation, storage, sharing, and preservation of research data. It allows researchers to find and access data.
Data Management Plans (DMPs) are foundational to good research data management and are an international best practice. Many funding agencies, including the Canadian Tri-Agencies, have begun to require researchers to submit a research data management and sharing plan as part of the grant application. For some academic journals, data sharing is now a requirement for publication.
Greo recommends that researchers use the DMP Assistant to assist in the creation of DMPs. The DMP Assistant is an online, bilingual data management planning tool. It was developed by the Digital Research Alliance of Canada. It is freely available and walks researchers step-by-step through the creation of a DMP by asking key data management questions.
Additionally, the Digital Research Alliance of Canada offers a range of training resources to assist with data management planning, access preservation, and discovery. You can access these resources here.
