Studies regularly show that people who gamble frequently, spend more money on gambling, and spend longer on EGMs, will likely experience more harm. Since more gambling usually leads to more harm, there is some interest in finding ‘safe’ limits for gambling. Many countries have used research on alcohol consumption and harm to create safe levels of alcohol use; however, there is much less research about how gambling consumption results in long-term harm. Plus, different kinds of gambling typically result in different degrees of harm. It may be that there are specific levels of safe gambling for each type of gambling and each kind of high-risk gambler (those with past gambling problems, those with other mental health issues and addictions, youth, etc.).
